Motor Scooter Safety

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

With the fairly recent rise in motor scooter sales throughout the United States a new problem has surfaced; Motor Scooter accidents.  A recent story which can be found here, states that motor scooter accidents are on the rise.  Likely the reason for this is because of the number of inexperienced scooter drivers on the road.  Because of high gas prices, many who would never have owned a motor scooter are now buying them as a means of saving money.

So how do you drive a scooter safely?  First thing would be to make sure that you wear a helmet.  Some states have laws that require helmets, while other states do not.  Whether or not you are allowed by the limits of the law to ride without a helmet, I would suggest that you always wear one.

Another safety concern is that many are driving without ever having taken a scooter safety course.  Beyond that, many have never driven any other motorized vehicle other than a car; This is a big mistake.  If you are going to set out on the road on a scooter, take a safety course first and learn how to drive it properly.  Many just go to the store, buy a motor scooter and drive away, without any training or knowledge of how to operate the vehicle safely.
