Motor Scooter Safety

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

With the fairly recent rise in motor scooter sales throughout the United States a new problem has surfaced; Motor Scooter accidents.  A recent story which can be found here, states that motor scooter accidents are on the rise.  Likely the reason for this is because of the number of inexperienced scooter drivers on the road.  Because of high gas prices, many who would never have owned a motor scooter are now buying them as a means of saving money.

So how do you drive a scooter safely?  First thing would be to make sure that you wear a helmet.  Some states have laws that require helmets, while other states do not.  Whether or not you are allowed by the limits of the law to ride without a helmet, I would suggest that you always wear one.

Another safety concern is that many are driving without ever having taken a scooter safety course.  Beyond that, many have never driven any other motorized vehicle other than a car; This is a big mistake.  If you are going to set out on the road on a scooter, take a safety course first and learn how to drive it properly.  Many just go to the store, buy a motor scooter and drive away, without any training or knowledge of how to operate the vehicle safely.

Yamaha C3 Motor Scooter

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

This unique little scooter has a great combination of fuel economy, functionality and versatility. The first thing you'll notice is that the C3 looks to have been built out of a box and this is somewhat true.

Yamaha C3

The seat sits on top of a box that is actually a very large storage compartment which boasts 9 gallons of cubic storage.  As for gas mileage it reportedly gets 115mpg and with a 1.2 gallon gas tank, it's not going to cost much to drive the C3.

One of the first things you'll also notice is the simplicity of it's design.  With fat rugged tires and a simple instrument cluster, the Yamaha C3 is as simple as it gets for those that just need inexpensive, basic, yet functional transportation.   With a 49cc engine it's obvious that fuel economy was in mind when Yamaha made the C3 and given todays gas prices, that's just fine with me.  If you're looking for one of these you're going to have to wait until October 2008 when they hit showrooms and retail for around $2100.

Here is a video review of the 2008 Yamaha C3 Scooter.

Honda Silverwing Scooter

Don't confuse this with Honda's previously popular Silver Wing Motorcycle or its Gold Wing series motorcycles; This is a scooter!  Full of options, the Honda Silver Wing Scooter just might be the ultimate in luxury scooting. Packed with a whole host of features, these motor scooters are sure to satisfy even the most sophisticated rider.  With a 582cc engine, the Silver Wing will provide more than enough power for long trips on the highway all while doing it in comfort.  The Silver Wing comes in 2 different models almost identical except for the addition of Anti-Lock Brakes.

The Honda Silver Wing Scooter is so full of options and offers extreme comfort that you might think you're just riding in a convertible!   The Honda Silver Wing scooter is most likely to be compared to the Suzuki Burgman or the Piaggio Atlantic which are similar in options and size.  Speaking of size, this scooter is much heavier than the small scooters we normally see.  Weighing in at 582lbs, you may need some help picking this one up if you drop her.

The bad news is that all this luxury does come at a price.  A new Silver Wing Scooter is likely going to cost somewhere around $8000 to buy, but there are many good used Honda Silver Wing scooters available on the market today.

Roketa 150cc Scooters - Roketa MC-70-150

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Roketa ScootersRoketa Scooters have emerged as a leader in offshore motor scooters.  Built in China, these inexpensive scooters just might be a good option for your next scooter purchase.

The model pictured here is the Roketa MC-70-150.  Featuring a 150cc 4 stroke engine this Roketa scooter combines economy and comfort all in one.  Scooters with engines of around 150cc are perfect for driving at higher speeds and with the 16 inch tires on the MC-70-150, you'll get a nice smooth ride.  This particular Roketa scooter comes with an advanced ABS braking system and an alarm system.

The best part about this gas scooter and any gas scooter really, is the fuel economy.  For example, the Roketa MC-70-150 scooter has a gas tank that holds just 2.34 gallons which at todays gas price would be somewhere around $10 to fill up.  I think that's a bit easier to deal with than filling up even a small car at $50!

Yamaha Zuma - 123 MPG?

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

If you visit Yamaha's website and look at the details for a 2009 Yamaha Zuma, the company states that it can achieve mileage of 123mpg.  If this is the case, everyone should get one of these!

Yamaha Zuma

Yamaha started building the Zuma, a 49cc gas powered motor scooter in 1997.  They stopped producing them for 2006 and  2007 and returned to the market in 2008.  Now I'm not sure if 123mpg is the maximum mileage that could be achieved only if a 100lb girl was riding it, with a strong tailwind, or if this is for real.  I suppose if Yamaha states that it can get great mileage, they  have the tests to prove it.

I have read reviews of the Yamaha Zuma from actual owners and they claim to get between 75 & 85mpg, which is still great.

I've been driving a fairly small car for the past few years now and it can only achieve about 40mpg, and a fill-up now costs about me $55.  Imagine the joy of owning a Yamaha Zuma and pulling up to the gas station beside a huge SUV.  You glance over at the numbers on their pump and you see $110,$111,$112 and so on.  You begin filling your Yamaha Zuma and within a few seconds, you're done.  A grand total of $6.10!!

Now's the time to jump on the motor scooter bandwagon.  If the media are correct, the gas prices are only going to get worse and we'll start seeing more motor scooters on the road.

Here's a guy that just bought a Zuma and seems to be pretty happy with it!
